Treatment to regenerate knee, back cartilage is tested

For the millions of people who suffer daily pain and loss of mobility from cartilage damage to their knees or spinal discs, surgery requiring plastic or metal implants is often the only solution.

After all, scientists believed for many years that adult cartilage could not repair itself. Cartilage, the spongy material that cushions bones and knees, may be torn during athletic activities, traumatic joint injuries or slowly worn away just from normal use over the years.

But ISTO Technologies Inc., an Olivette-based orthobiologics company, is testing promising treatments that can replace cartilage lost to trauma or disease.

“There is hope we can actually heal cartilage,” said Mitchell Seyedin, president and chief executive officer.
