Breakthrough for damaged knees

Or maybe just another false dawn. Swiss scientists claim a dramatic new development. Not everyone is convinced though.

A team from Bern says major surgery could be a thing of the past to repair torn ACLs. Knee injuries are the most common injury for skiers.

At the moment surgery on the knee is needed to repair the ligament but the new treatment would mean an implant is made instead.

They have devised a mechanism, made up of a screw with a spring inside, which is placed into the tibia or shinbone.

This stabilises the torn ligament at the right position for it to heal, but doesn’t affect mobility.

A patient can move reasonably normally and the implant apparently means the knee is not unstable anymore.
