Details: NuVasive Inc. has filed a $1.6 million permit application with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement to renovate its building at 4670 E. Shelby Drive in the Oakhaven/Village Parkway area.

The San Diego-based company, which manufactures devices for minimally invasive spinal surgeries, operates a distribution center at the location. It bought the 97,800-square-foot, 19-year-old facility in June 2006.

Luke Newell, division manager at general contractor Montgomery Martin Contractors LLC, said the building is divided into thirds, with NuVasive occupying the west and center bays.

The renovation plan calls for Montgomery Martin to build out about 40,000 square feet in the middle of the building into new office and warehouse space for NuVasive. The area previously was used for storage.

Newell said the company also would perform some minor renovations to the space where NuVasive already is operating, on the west side of the building. Work began Jan. 18 and should wrap by May 1, Newell said.

The Memphis and Shelby County Industrial Development Board in 2008 awarded NuVasive an eight-year, $5.3 million payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) exemption.

NuVasive’s distribution center sits on 5.93 acres at the northwest corner of East Shelby Drive and Pleasant Hill Road. The Shelby County Assessor of Property’s 2009 appraisal was $3.7 million.
