X-spine gets FDA approval for fusion system

X-spine Systems Inc., a spinal disease treatment device manufacturer, this week received FDA clearance for an interspinous fusion system to treat degenerative disk disease.

The Miamisburg-based company’s AXLE-PEEK Interspinous Fusion System expands on its line of interspinous fusion devices and can be placed with a smaller and less disruptive incision that traditional spinal fusion devices, according to X-spine.

With this clearance, the company provides spine surgeons a choice between titanium or polymer implant materials.

“This type of innovation exemplifies our philosophy of putting multiple treatment options into the hands of the spine surgeon and patient,” said Dr. David Kirschman, X-spine president and CEO.

The approval comes on the heels of FDA approval for X-spine’s Calix PC Spinal Implant System, announced last month.

The Dayton region supports other biotech companies, including STATKING Consulting Inc. in Fairfield, Therapeutic Alliances in Fairborn and Oakwood Laboratories LLC in Oakwood.

A report released this summer showed that in southwest Ohio, the biotech industry created 43,000 jobs, directly and indirectly, in 2009.
