Bonovo(R) Orthopedics, Inc. Launches the First PEEK Lateral Interbody Fusion Cage in China

BEIJING, Aug 21, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Bonovo(R) Orthopedics, Inc. announced today that it has launched the first PEEK (PEEK-OPTIMA(R) polymer from INVIBIO(R)) lateral interbody fusion cage, Cross-Fuse(R) in China. Minimally Invasive Lateral Interbody Fusion (MILIF) had been gaining increasing popularity in the U.S. and Europe due to its less invasive nature and proven safety and effectiveness.

According to Chip Bao, Ph.D., Bonovo’s Chief Executive Officer, “We feel extremely privileged to be the first to introduce this new technology into China so Chinese patients can benefit from this minimally invasive surgical treatment with proven clinical results. The speed of approval through the SFDA of this important therapy is a testament to the expertise of the Bonovo clinical and regulatory team.”

Professor Xifeng Zhang, M.D., Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) of the Orthopedic Department at 301 Hospital in Beijing, successfully performed the first Cross-Fuse(R) surgery at 301 Hospital in China with Dr. John Regan, a world renowned spine surgeon specializing in MIS. Professor Zhang stated, “Many Chinese surgeons have been waiting for this new technique for a long time so they can apply this minimally invasive surgery to their patients. Like the rest of the world, MIS has become a strong trend in China. In general, Chinese patients tend to favour conservative care or less invasive surgeries. With the SFDA approval of Cross-Fuse(R), I am glad that Chinese surgeons finally have another minimally invasive surgical option to treat their patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease.”

Cross-Fuse(R) is manufactured by Pioneer Surgical Technology, Inc. (Marquette, MI), a key business partner of Bonovo Orthopedics. Cross-Fuse(R) is made of polyether ether ketone (PEEK), a biomaterial with proven biocompatibility and properties similar to that of human bone.
