Arthrosurface(R) Implants the first ToeMotion Total Toe in the US

FRANKLIN, Mass., June 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Arthrosurface((R)), Inc. (www.arthrosurface.com), a developer of less-invasive joint restoration systems, performed its first ToeMotion(TM) total toe surgeries with Dr. Carl Hasselman last week at UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Hasselman, who has been using the HemiCAP((R)) system for almost a decade now, combined the new phalangeal implants with the existing HemiCAP((R)) metatarsal implants to create a total toe joint restoration.

“I have known for quite some time that the screw based fixation of the HemiCAP((R)) system is superior to any of the other press-fit solutions currently on the market. The instant fixation, immediate weight-bearing and early motion is critical to the excellent outcomes my patients have experienced with the Arthrosurface system over the past decade” said Dr. Hasselman.

The ToeMotion(TM) Total Toe Restoration System, co-designed by Arthrosurface((R)), Dr. San Giovanni from Doctor’s Hospital in Miami, FL and Dr. Hasselman, restores mobility and maintains native biomechanics using a dual curved HemiCAP((R)) DF implant and a new modular tray-style phalangeal implant with a threaded baseplate. The fourth generation fixation components provide stable constructs on both sides of the joint.

Dr. San Giovanni stated, “Today, patients are looking for an alternative to a toe fusion in order to preserve their mobility. Although toe fusion procedures can provide pain relief, they do not restore normal biomechanics and severely limit motion. Never moving their toe again is not a very appealing option to patients.”

Steve Ek, CEO of Arthrosurface((R)) commented, “We expect the ToeMotion(TM) total toe system to be a game changer for those patients with arthritis of the 1(st) MTP joint. Due to the prior success of the HemiCAP((R)) DF as well as the HemiCAP((R)) knee and shoulder systems, it became obvious that adding a phalangeal component to accompany the DF would be successful in the market. Proven fixation with implants that restore motion is a great new option.”
