Spine Wave Announces the Commercial Launch of the Velocity™ L Expandable Interbody Device and the enhanced Lateral System

SHELTON, CT–(Marketwired – August 10, 2016) – Spine Wave, Inc. is committed to the commercialization of high-quality, innovative medical devices for the treatment of spinal disorders. Spine Wave continues to extend the pioneering efforts of its expandable technologies with the introduction of the Velocity L Expandable Interbody Device and the XLR® II Lateral Access System. Spine Wave is now positioned for a full commercial launch of a comprehensive lateral system that will benefit surgeons using the lateral surgical approach.

The Velocity L Expandable Interbody Device is designed to minimize the forceful impaction of large lateral implants into collapsed disc spaces by offering a low profile insertion height with subsequent controlled expansion to the desired disc space height. Once expanded, the Velocity™ L’s novel bone grafting system allows the surgeon to easily place significant amounts of bone graft into the large, continuous graft chamber to maximize endplate to bone graft contact, even in cases with large endplate convexity. The implant’s load-bearing core is made from PEEK, a material well known for its favorable modulus. A unique titanium shell encompasses the implant and enhances its strength while a plasma sprayed titanium coating provides the surface texture and endplate interface many surgeons prefer. Velocity L is implanted using the next generation XLR® II Access System. The XLR® II Access System uniquely combines simplicity and versatility to offer access stability, excellent visualization and intraoperative flexibility.

“The Velocity L is the culmination of a multiyear effort to develop an implant that embodies all the characteristics surgeons desire in a lateral expandable interbody device. We believe that this revolutionary new expandable device, when coupled with new XLR® II Access System and the Abacus® Lateral Spacer System, will provide Spine Wave with a compelling offering for surgeons performing lateral procedures,” said Mark LoGuidice, Spine Wave’s Chief Executive Officer.

“I believe strongly in the importance of preserving endplates as part of a comprehensive surgical strategy to minimize the risk of subsidence” said Fred Mo, M.D., Attending Orthopedic Spine Surgeon at Georgetown University Hospital. “The Velocity L implant allows me to insert a very low profile device, thus minimizing trauma to the endplates, while its expansion capabilities allow me to achieve optimal indirect decompression. The device also has a huge graft chamber which can be easily filled post expansion. I’ve also been impressed with the new XLR® II Lateral Access System which is as easy and intuitive as any retractor on the market and it’s more versatile than most. I believe expandable devices represent an important step forward in lateral surgery which is why this system is now an important part of my surgical armamentarium.”
