3D Imaging: A Major Development for Hip or Knee Arthroplasty

PARIS, Oct. 25, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A study, presented during a trauma and degenerative osteo-articular pathologies session at the Journees Francaises de Radiologie (JFR) in Paris, France, has shown the superiority of EOS imaging in relation to the CT scan, seen as the gold standard modality for lower limb torsional assessment.

The results, presented Monday, October 24, highlighted:

  • That there is no significant difference between femoral torsion measurements for the two modalities;
  • That the comparative dosimetric study between the two modalities, conducted by the Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), shows dose exposure is reduced by a factor of 20 with the EOS imaging system.

The aim of this study was to compare torsion 3D settings provided by EOS in a standing position to torsion measurements obtained by CT scan in a recumbent position during hip replacement surgery planning. Thirty patients underwent antero-posterior and lateral view exams with EOS, and a torsional balance under CT scan for the lower limbs. Measurements of the two techniques were made by three independent observers.

This study complements a study presented at the Journees Francaises de Radiologie 2010 conference on knee arthroplasty surgery planning, usually made by standard x-ray radiography. The 2010 study, which involved 315 lower limbs, compared conventional measures to EOS 3D measures. Results showed a bias above 2 ° in 22% of cases and a bias above 4 ° in 5% of the cases with standard x-rays, distorted by the effects of bending and rotation of the lower limb. The 3D measurements with EOS eliminated these biases. The femur-tibia alignment is a major focus of surgical planning prior to a knee prosthesis, and it has been shown that after knee arthroplastic surgery, the restoration of a satisfactory alignment promotes increased durability of the implant.
