Hundreds of Australian patients joined a class action lawsuit accusing health care giant Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) of damages related to recalled metal-on-metal hip implants.

A Down Under law firm co-handling the lawsuit estimated patients’ claims to top $200 million,CourrierMail.com.au reported.

Metal-on-metal hips have spurred much controversy since DePuy launched a recall in August 2010. One U.K. study called for an outright ban as researchers found that the devices failed more often than other hip replacements.
