DePuy opens Institute for Advanced Education and Research

DePuy, a Johnson & Johnson Company and one of the world’s largest orthopaedic and neuroscience device companies, recently announced the opening of the DePuy Institute for Advanced Education and Research in India.

The new 30,000 square-foot facility, the largest DePuy facility of its kind outside the US, is located at Mahindra World City near Chennai. It will serve as one of the company’s hubs for education training and research on everything from non-surgical early intervention to complex surgery in the areas of orthopedics, spinal care, sports medicine, soft tissue repair, trauma, and neurosciences.

“The DePuy Institute will serve as a hub for education, training and research across the continuum of orthopaedic and neurological care. Every year, thousands of clinicians and health professionals throughout the world participate in DePuy’s educational and training programmes in orthopaedics, spine, sports medicine and neurosciences. These programmes represent the best in industry-supported education,”said GaryFischetti, Worldwide Company Group Chairman, DePuy.

“This DePuy Institute will expand the pool of trained surgeons to cater to the unmet needs of several thousands of patients in India. This initiative will significantly improve access to top class medical care,’’ said Michael del Prado, Company Group Chairman, Johnson & Johnson Medical, Asia-Pacific.

“The DePuy Institute will offer year-round educational programmes on the latest concepts, techniques and technologies in the areas of minimally invasive surgery, aging spine, deformity, neurological disease, joint replacement, and trauma care featuring top faculty from leading teaching institutions and academic centers in India and across the world,” said A Vaidheesh, MD, Johnson & Johnson Medical India.

The Institute has a 100-seat auditorium, multiple classrooms, and a multi-station skills laboratory. State-of-the-art audiovisual technology will enable healthcare professionals from all over the world to make new connections with their peers and colleagues that we hope will last a lifetime.

The first programme at the institute was the ‘Arthroplasty Essentials’ course. It is a unique educational programme for practising orthopaedic surgeons who are interested in mastering the art of primary arthroplasty.

The course is accredited by Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University and the candidates will be awarded 10 CME credit points. More than 1,000 healthcare and sales professionals are expected to participate in around 100 programmes during the institute’s inaugural year.

The course aims to equip surgeons with the fundamental skill sets necessary to deal with common joint replacement situations. The programme will consist of didactic sessions on primary total hip and total knee replacements, viewing of recorded surgery and interactive discussions with the faculty.

The setting up of the Depuy Institute will significantly boost surgeon capacity with much more intensive training.
