DePuy Spine top contributor to OREF Clinician Development Program for 2010-2011

ROSEMONT, IL – January 21, 2010 – The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) today announced a commitment in excess of $2 million from DePuy Spine in support of the foundation’s Clinician Development Program (CDP) for the 2010-2011 academic year. DePuy Spine’s participation helped bring total support for CDP grants this year to $7,513,750, an increase of 88% over last year when seven partners provided $3,985,000 for CDP grants.

DePuy Spine is the first exclusively spine-focused company to participate in OREF’s Clinical Development Program.
“DePuy Spine’s strong commitment to the OREF Clinician Development Program reflects the company’s heritage of leadership and management’s confidence in this very successful program for facilitating independent support of ongoing education and clinical training programs,” said OREF Board Chair William P. Cooney III, M.D.

About the OREF Clinician Development Program

Established in 2008, OREF’s CDP is a successful new model for grant making. It facilitates corporate support for orthopaedic education and research grants while complying with federal mandates and reflecting best practices for transparency, independence, and accountability. OREF CDP grants support graduate medical education (GME) fellowships, residency enhancement programs, continuing medical education (CME) courses, and clinically relevant research.

Approved by monitors appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice for three orthopaedic device manufacturers, the CDP grant-selection process is directed and overseen by the OREF Educational Grants Board, which is comprised of prominent orthopaedic surgeons with no industry conflicts.
