Detroit Medical Center Announces the First Implantation of ConforMIS’ Personalized Knee Resurfacing System in Michigan

DETROIT–(BUSINESS WIRE)–DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital announced today the first implantations of a patient-specific, partial knee resurfacing implant designed and manufactured by ConforMIS, Inc. have been performed in Michigan. The novel implant system is intended for patients suffering from the earlier stages of osteoarthritis of the knee, a condition that affects more than 27 million adults in the United States.

On November 18, 2008, Drs. Ronald Lederman and Mark Kwartowitz, orthopedic surgeons at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, performed the first local implantation of the iUni®. The iUni is the only personalized unicompartmental knee resurfacing implant on the market. The implant is designed as a bone-sparing alternative to a traditional total knee replacement for early intervention patients whose arthritic damage is limited to just one compartment of the knee. The iUni resurfaces only the affected areas, preserving far more bone on both the femur and tibia than traditional total knee replacement surgery. It also preserves all of the patient’s ligaments, helping to maintain a more natural feeling knee, and safeguards options for future surgical procedures. Since the first implantation in November, seven patients have received ConforMIS implants at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital.
