Medical technology company signs Spanish deal
30 June 2010. Christchurch, New Zealand – Enztec has secured a contract with a Spanish distributor for the design, manufacture and supply of instruments for knee replacement surgery.
Designed and manufactured in Christchurch, the instruments will be distributed across Europe by Spanish company MBA, which has an annual turnover of €85M.
“This project is the largest we have ever done in the shortest space of time; it’s been stressful but we have achieved some great things.
“MBA are quite a significant European distributor and are looking to open up a lot of other markets including South America and Australasia. Our partnership is potentially long term and could be very fruitful for us,” says Enztec’s General Manager Stephen O’Neill.
“The design aims were to take some of the cost out, and make the instruments sexier while giving more functionality. Our team has achieved all of those goals,” says Stephen.
The contract was initiated through Enztec’s sister company in the US, OMNI life science. “It’s been a huge design and manufacturing win. We started with the Enztec designs and tailored them to our customer’s requirements. We’ve been able to turn those designs into reality in an incredible short space of time.”
The first round of instruments was shipped in June with the remaining shipments to leave in the coming months. Enztec has had to bring in outside resources to cope with the scale of the project.
“We have had fantastic support from other local companies as we outsource a lot of manufacturing to firms in Christchurch, Auckland, Tauranga, and Hawkes Bay for the delivery of the project. For us it’s a sign that Enztec is growing and we’ve had to take on more staff because of it.”
Stephen says because of the initial success of the instruments, he’s hopeful for future orders, especially if the product becomes more mainstream in the US market.
