As we continue to try to get better information for you all to view, were here at OSN have decided that just being a site that re-posts press releases is boring. We are a fun loving group here and want to spark conversation. As often as I can think of valuable material, I will post a thought or two about something that I have read  or seen in the industry. This will be an opinion blog so you all can see what I see. If you agree, great!! If not, that’s ok too. We all see the industry through a different lens and I would welcome healthy debate if you disagree.

As many of you already know, this site is run by the same guys from The De Angelis Group, an executive search firm that specializes in Orthopedic and Spine start-ups to mid-sized companies. Many of the posts will be about what we see, without disclosing any confidential information. Frankly, a lot of the ideas will come from news releases/stories we have found and will share our opinion about them. With that being said, let’s hit up the first topic!!

This morning I saw an article that SNN is going to lay-off 80 people from the Memphis office. Well, I guess there is no doubt that Andover has officially taken over the reigns, right? It’s amusing to me that whenever I talk to people after a takeover, consolidation, acquisition, etc., that most everyone is excited about the change. I think they live under the “but this is different” delusion. They all think they are safe!! The Memphis employees are just one example, another recent example is the folks at Synthes. I sometimes just want to scream out, “This is NOT DIFFERENT!”. The management team is obligated to tell you whatever is necessary to keep continuity in the business until they can figure things out. Then, they will eliminate positions  that are redundant (sound familiar?? If not, please read this press release from today…) Here is what I implore you to do, for the sake of your family… If you find out that there is a dramatic change in the business you are working in, something that involves new leadership/direction, be smart. I’m not saying you should immediately be an active candidate for another position. I’m saying don’t be like every single contestant on Survivor when they get blindsided (camera cuts to the newbie on redemption island and they say, “I can’t believe they would do this to me!! I didn’t see it coming!! I am so upset with my tribe, etc, etc, etc). All right, that’s it for now. Enjoy the rest of your day!
