Medtronic to open new $65M Memphis distribution center

Medtronic Inc. will officially open its new $65 million distribution center Tuesday at 4340 Swinnea Road.

The distribution center, which is comprised of two buildings, will employ more than 260 people.

The company is using it to ship spinal implants and instruments, pacemakers, stints, deliberators and other products.

Medtronic purchased the buildings, located on 22 acres, from Weston Co.

One building, which is 157,000 square feet, was new construction designed to accommodate an expansion of 300,000 to 400,000 square feet.

The other building, which was 118,000 square feet, was renovated and a 34,000-square-foot mezzanine was added, bringing the total building to 152,000 square feet.

Thoda and Associates designed the renovation, while Linkous Construction Co. was the general contractor.

“It is important to grow this facility in Memphis because it is critical to our business model because of the strategic geographical location of Memphis and our partner ship with FedEx and the FedEx air hub,” company spokesperson Victor Rocha said. “There is a significant distribution talent pool to pull from in the city and the surrounding area.”
