Researchers of this study found 10.5% of patients with diabetes who underwent primary lower extremity amputation were readmitted within 30 days, with medical and surgical complications contributing to readmission.
Researchers identified 439 patients with a diagnosis of diabetes who underwent primary lower extremity amputation between 2002 and 2013, and categorized them into groups with and without unplanned readmission within 30 days postoperatively. Comorbidities, hemoglobin A1c level, amputation level and demographic characteristics were determined through chart review.
