Serica selects Weitzel, Haynes for executive roles

Medford-based medical device company Serica Technologies Inc., has appointed Paul Weitzel as vice president of medical affairs for orthopedics, and Mona Haynes as chief commercial officer.

Serica, which makes ligament grafts, surgical meshes and gels, says its silk-based biomaterial platforms are meant to create scaffolds to enable tissue repair and regeneration. Weitzel is an orthopedic surgeon and assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. He specializes in sports medicine, primarily on minimally invasive arthroscopy of shoulders and knees. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his residency at Harvard and his fellowship at Tufts New England Medical Center.

Prior to this appointment, he was an adviser to Serica. In his current role, he will shape the clinical development and applications of the silk-based biomaterials in knee and shoulder repair, Serica stated in a press release. He also will continue to work closely with the company’s medical advisory board and clinical investigators, as Serica continues registration studies in Europe and the U.S.
