Trinity Orthopedics Receives Patent Allowance for Sagittally Stable Spinal Fixation System

SAN DIEGO, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Trinity Orthopedics LLC, a medical device company that develops and markets products for minimally invasive spine surgery, announced today that it has received a Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a monoplanar pedicle screw method, system and kit.  Trinity currently markets the posterior fixation system in the United States under the ReStor name.

"Recent clinical studies support our assertion that failure to re-establish and maintain the natural curve of the lumbar spine adversely loads adjacent discs and may lead to further degeneration and additional surgery," said James F. Marino, M.D., Trinity's founder and lead inventor of the novel monoplanar screw design.  "Our ReStor system is intended to help the surgeon fuse the spine in an anatomical position as well as maintain the integrity of the anterior column."  Adjacent segment degeneration is reported to have a 5-10% re-operation rate for fusion of adjacent levels.

Three US patents have previously been granted to Trinity, and eighteen US and sixteen foreign patents are pending surrounding minimally invasive surgical technique, implantable devices, and supporting instrumentation.
