Turbulence Ahead

Turbulence Ahead

Good morning folks, this is your captain speaking. While here at AAOS, some big news was announced. No, no acquisitions that we are aware of. Yes, there are a lot of new products being launched here. But what I want to talk about is this Press Release that came out yesterday. Stephen MacMillian, the leader of Stryker Global has resigned, effective immediately. Now the most curious part is that it was effective immediately. Usually, when a CEO resigns from a company the size and influence of Stryker the press release reads more like “Stephen MacMillian has decided to step down at the end of the year. Until then, the company will search for his replacement.” Take a look at this release from a while ago when Medtronic’s CEO, Bill Hawkins, decided he was going to move on.

So according to the chatter, there is a lot more going on here. I mean, how many CEO positions pay $2.5 Million per year? Furthermore, who leaves those positions effective immediately without having some consulting relationship predefined?

Since most of you will be flying home, I’ll end this story the way a friendly flight attendant would… “The captain has turned on your fasten seatbelt sign as we are about to encounter some turbulence. Please return your seatback and trays to their upright and locked positions, turn all electronics in their permanent off position (This means you Alec Baldwin) and we will be by shortly to make sure you are comfortable.”
