VG Innovations pursues patent for back device

VG Innovations Inc. isn’t bashful about its prospects.

The medical-devices startup company, based in Winston-Salem, said it is offering a “paradigm shift” in treating some forms of lower back pain that may delay or eliminate the need for major surgery.

Officials are pursuing a patent for VerteLoc, which uses human bone about the size of a pencil eraser to limit motion of the affected spinal segment. The device offers patients more flexibility and a quicker recovery time than metal rods and screws.

“Eighty percent of Americans will experience back pain during their lifetime, either from muscle strain, degenerative spinal disease or the narrowing of their spinal column,” said Dan Grayson, the chief executive and co-founder of the company along with Tov Vestgaarden.
Grayson has more than 10 years of experience in the field of spinal instruments and implants.
