New Novant Health orthopedic & sports medicine clinic brings total joint center to market

CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 6, 2020 – Novant Health today marked the opening of its newest comprehensive clinic in the greater Charlotte market. The $3 million, 13,000 square foot investment brings a majority of musculoskeletal care together under one roof, while also serving as the central location for the Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute’s new total joint center.

“This facility will bring highly coordinated care and an unparalleled experience to our patients,” said Dr. Bryan Edwards, senior vice president of the Novant Health Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute. “We want to provide the same care to our patients, here, that our physicians provide to Charlotte’s top professional athletes and teams. To do that, we’ve reimagined what a clinic can look like – not only from a design perspective, but from how we package and deliver that care.”

At the institute’s first-of-its-kind total joint center, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons Dr. David Homesley and Dr. James Fraser will exclusively provide total joint services, which will include same-day total joint replacement procedures using the region’s only robotic-arm assisted technology device called MAKO. Together, the surgeons perform more than 1,000 total joint replacements a year.

“This exclusive focus on total joints not only benefits patients as far as safety and quality outcomes, but the specialty model serves as a way for the institute, as a business, to bundle its services and reduce costs for payors and customers,” said Zachary Landry, vice president of the Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. “While the Cotswold location is the primary location for the total joint center, we look forward to having specialists throughout the market to meet patients where they are, and we’ll be announcing additional specialized centers throughout the year.”

Dr. Jerry Barron, team physician for the Charlotte Checkers, Charlotte Ballet and Joe Gibbs Racing, played a large role in the design of the clinic and will continue to provide expert sports medicine care to patients, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, rotator cuff tears, meniscal injuries and fractures.

“We kept our patients at the center of every decision with a focus on flow and efficiency,” said Dr. Jerry Barron, of Novant Health. “From creating clinical PODs to increasing the number of X-ray rooms and scheduling stations, this clinic is designed to get patients in, out and back to living their lives.”

The Cotswold clinic is also a home to sports psychologist Dr. Joanne Perry. With behavioral health being integrated into the institute’s core services, Dr. Perry’s focus will be on the discipline’s role in surgical outcomes while also addressing any psychological experience or concern an athlete might have.

Fellowship-trained orthopedic hand specialist Dr. Brandon Valentine and his team will offer increased access, focus attention on a patient’s needs in today’s changing surgical environment and will be performing low-cost minor surgical procedures, such as carpal tunnel releases in one of the clinic’s three procedure rooms.

Fellowship-trained foot and ankle specialist Dr. John Marcel and his team will be able to offer increased access and same-day appointments for acute emergency injuries.

Patients of the Cotswold clinic will be treated at the Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital if their care plan determines that need. Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital is the only dedicated orthopedic hospital in the region and is nationally recognized for its industry leading patient outcomes, including low readmission rates, minimal infections and safety events, and programs and education to support the patient’s entire care journey.

Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Cotswold is located at 4741 Randolph Road, Suite 100, Charlotte, NC 28211, and is open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute is one of the few groups nationally to offer true online scheduling.
